Insect Science Cycling Team Overcomes Challenges with Team Spirit and Toyota Partnership

Last weekend, 8- 11 February 2024, the Insect Science Cycling Team embarked on the exhilarating journey of the Tankwa Trek 2024.

In this post, we’ll delve into the team’s journey, the competitive landscape, and the crucial role played by our reliable Toyota Hilux bakkies. With breathtaking trails through the Bokkeveld and winding routes in the Witzenburg area, this race features some of the most unique scenery South Africa has to offer.

Team Roster and Support Staff: The Insect Science Cycling Team comprised five riders this year: Arno Du Toit and Keagan Bontekoning as the usual duo, Herman Fourie and Alan Gordon forming another pair, and a last-minute entry by CP van Wyk riding with a friend. The support team included Nicol Carstens as team manager, Armand de Wet as our masseuse, Jeremy du Toit as our mechanic, and Jason and Leslie Boulle as social media/content creators, highlighting the comprehensive approach to the race.

Performance and Highlights: Despite setbacks, particularly with Keagan and Alan falling ill, the team showcased noteworthy moments. Arno’s impressive solo ride on stage 3 stood out, earning him the fifth fastest time despite the challenges.

Facing off against the Imbuko Pro Cycling Team, the race provided vital insights ahead of the upcoming Cape Epic. A surprising revelation was the impressive speed of South African riders, solidifying our belief in the local talent.
Team Bond and Resilience: The Insect Science Cycling Team prides itself on a strong bond among riders and staff. This solidarity proves crucial in overcoming tough times, reinforcing the team’s resilience and setting them apart from others.

Toyota Partnership – Logistics and Strategy: Malmesbury Toyota’s sponsorship played a pivotal role, with Hilux bakkies ensuring seamless logistics. Fitted with rooftop tents for riders and used by our media crew, the Hilux bakkies proved indispensable for navigating challenging terrain and accessing remote feed zones.

Terrain Challenges and Hilux Performance: Tankwa’s demanding terrain, from rocky surfaces to loose sand, showcased the exceptional performance of our Toyota Hilux bakkies. Their off-road capabilities allowed the team to tackle obstacles with ease, ensuring a smooth journey.

Comfort and Convenience: In scorching conditions, the Hilux bakkies provided essential comfort. Quick trips for additional shade and logistics to Ceres were made possible, contributing to the team’s overall well-being during the challenging race.

Stress-Free Travel: The Hilux bakkies transformed the long journey to Tankwa into a stress-free experience. Their reliability and comfort significantly enhanced the team’s travel, making the trek more enjoyable.
Logistical Ease: The Hilux bakkies’ versatility came to the forefront during Keagan’s mid-race exit. Despite concerns about luggage and equipment, the team effortlessly packed everything onto the remaining three Hilux bakkies, showcasing their adaptability.

Conclusion: The Tankwa Trek 2024 proved to be a test of endurance and teamwork for the Insect Science Cycling Team. With their resilience, camaraderie, and the unwavering support of Team Manager Nicol, The Support staff and amazing sponsors, the team faced challenges head-on, leaving behind a memorable experience that will undoubtedly shape their approach to future races.
